And.... I'm spent.
I'm done. I can't help it, it's about mid June and my school brain has shut down. I know some homeschoolers go year round... But I'm so conditioned to have summers off after years in public school, I just can't get my brain to work... Anyway, we still have a busy summer of therapy and camp and probably some projects and stuff... But that might be it for the official stuff for while... We had a bit of a rocky start, with the surgery and all, but I think I'd call it mostly a success!
In September we hopefully start oak meadow distance learning with a bona Fide curriculum and everything!
Inside your outside!
So Max had been bugging me for weeks with questions about what was inside human bodies and how they worked etc. So I'd been planning this segment in my head for awhile now. A couple of friends had recommended the squishy human body model and some of the magic school bus materials. I already had a couple of books that max had gotten for the holidays that I had been saving, so it wasn't much of a stretch to buy more materials for our two week experiment...
Here are the books we used, I found a DVD I wanted to try as well, I wasn't sure whether it would be appropriate for max as it seemed to be for older kids, but max wanted to watch it three times in a row... So I'd call that a success!
He also loved the squishy human body... Sooo much fun, even if the first thing he did was put all the organs back in the way HE thought they should go... Which somehow involved the heart in the middle of his stomach and the hand bones in the other leg!
We also did a "self portrait", I had max lie down on a big piece of brown paper, I traced around him (which he loved!). And then we drew in his internal organs etc. It's funny, when max really gets into something and is trying to concentrate he paces in circles around the room, and he was into this project. He chose all the colors we used, and was able to correctly place most of the organs... Although I still can't convince him that his heart is under his ribs!
We had less luck with the magic school bus kit. It came with good reviews and even some people saying they had used it with their five year olds... Maybe I'm out of the loop with typical five year old concentration and development, which is entirely possible, but I took one look at the projects they wanted us to do and said "no friggin way". At least starting to learn what is beyond maxs attention level! Maybe in a few years.
Still, he had fun playing with the materials and even came up with his own model... Apparently the coin on top (his skull) attaches directly to the esophagus (the tube) and right into his stomach (the pink balloon). The q-tips off the sides are his arms and legs.... There is a joke in there somewhere about little boys being all stomach!
Also a big hit were the stickers that the kits came with. We ended up make a diagram of daddy, and this time I let max place the organs all by himself... He did ok... Still can't convince him that his heart isn't in his stomach... Lol.
Update: I must be doing something right, this morning before breakfast I caught max drawing on himself again, but when he told me me he was drawing the veins and arteries in his legs... Well, how could I stop him? A proud homeschooling moment?? At least it washable marker!
